Safety
- Be seen. Add reflective tape or a glow stick to dark costumes and carry a flashlight. Sunset in late October in South Florida comes before 7 p.m.
- Drive slowly through neighborhoods from late afternoon, and watch for children crossing between parked cars.
- Check treats before kids eat them, and throw out anything unwrapped.
- Look up registered sex offenders near your route with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Sexual Offenders and Predators search, which the police department links from its site.
- Going away for the holiday weekend? Ask for a free house check through the police department’s Vacation Watch program.
- Keep pets in. Doorbells, costumes and open doors spook dogs and cats.
