The biggest road job in Coral Springs is the widening of the Sawgrass Expressway (State Road 869) along the western and northern edges of the city. Two Turnpike projects are under way at once, and both rebuild a Coral Springs interchange as a diverging diamond. The city also has street, sidewalk and bike lane projects of its own.

Sawgrass Expressway: Atlantic Boulevard to Sample Road
Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is widening the Sawgrass from Atlantic Boulevard (Exit 8) to Sample Road (Exit 11), according to its September 2026 fact sheet (PDF):
- Four more lanes, for five lanes in each direction.
- One more lane on the Sample Road entrance ramps and two more on the exit ramps.
- The Sample Road interchange becomes a partial diverging diamond, so drivers can turn left onto the ramps without crossing in front of oncoming traffic.
- Work is expected to continue through 2028. Cost: about $110 million.
The city’s Sawgrass project page says the new partial diverging diamond traffic pattern at Sample Road was expected to open starting mid-October. Drivers will follow new signals, lane markings and signs through the interchange and onto the ramps. Expect it to feel different the first few times you drive it.
Sawgrass Expressway: Sample Road to University Drive
A second Turnpike project covers the stretch from north of Sample Road to south of University Drive, through the Coral Ridge Drive and Coral Springs Drive exits. The fact sheet (PDF) lists:
- Two more lanes, for four lanes in each direction.
- The Coral Ridge Drive interchange becomes a diverging diamond, with four northbound and four southbound lanes at the exit ramp.
- Rebuilt and wider bridges at Coral Springs Drive and Coral Ridge Drive, new signals at Coral Springs Drive, lighting and drainage.
- Completion expected by late 2029. Cost: about $95 million.
Both projects work days and nights. The Turnpike says most lane closures are off-peak and are announced ahead in its South Florida weekly lane closure advisory. Neighbors can expect periodic construction light, noise and dust. To get email updates, write to Brielle.Gordon@dot.state.fl.us.
The Turnpike is also designing a widening north of Sample Road to west of U.S. 441 (State Road 7), from six to 10 lanes, in two segments. No construction dates have been set.
